Buying a Used Terex Crane or Loader? Run This 7-Point Inspection Checklist First

If you're a small contractor or equipment dealer shopping for a used Terex crane, loader, or skid steer, this checklist is for you. It's the same 7-point process I use at our company before any piece of equipment gets approved—I review roughly 150 units a year as a quality compliance manager. Most of these checks take less than an hour. Skipping them has cost buyers far more than that, in both money and downtime.

Here's the order I use, what to look for at each step, and where I've seen buyers get burned. Step 1 is the one most people skip, and it's the one that catches the most expensive problems.

Step 1: Verify the machine's identity and history

It's tempting to think you can evaluate a machine by walking around it. But the paperwork tells you what the paint doesn't. Check the serial number plates on every major component—boom, frame, engine, transmission—and compare them against the title and service records. Mismatched numbers are the first sign of a rebuilt or assembled machine.

For a Terex AC 220-5 or any all-terrain crane, the load chart and operator's manual should match the specific configuration of the machine. If the binder of documentation clearly belongs to a different unit, that's a red flag you can't unsee.

Then cross-reference the hour meter against service records. The "trust the hour meter" advice ignores a simple truth: hour meters get replaced, disconnected, and sometimes deliberately reset. I've seen a machine show 8,000 hours with wear you'd expect at 20,000. The paperwork is the trail.

Step 2: Check welds and structural components

Crane booms and loader arms handle brutal repeated stress. The first thing I look at is welds at connection points, boom sections, and—on cranes—the turntable area.

In Q2 2024, I inspected a Terex AC 220-5 for a rental fleet. The seller had clean paint and fresh tires. We found a hairline crack in the weld near the turntable bearing within 20 minutes. Step 3: Exercise the hydraulic system fully

Everyone checks the engine. Most buyers focus on engine hours and completely miss the hydraulic system—and that's where the expensive surprises live. In our fleet data, hydraulic failures are the leading cause of downtime on loaders and skid steers.

Let the machine idle, then cycle every function at full stroke: lift, tilt, steering, attachments. Watch for hesitation, drift, or noise. On a crane, drift in the winch or boom is a serious red flag that means immediate service.

Ask when the hydraulic fluid was last sampled and what the results showed. If the seller can't answer, that's useful information. A fluid analysis costs about $100 and can reveal failing pumps, coolant leaks, or contamination before they become five-figure repairs.

Step 4: Test the safety systems yourself

Don't ask if a load moment indicator, anti-two-block system, or backup alarm works. Operate it and watch it respond. On a crane, a dead LMI display isn't a minor issue—it's an operational safety requirement. According to OSHA 1926.1417 (osha.gov), operators must verify that safety devices are in working order before the crane is used.

On larger all-terrain cranes like the AC 220-5, check each outrigger load sensor individually. That's a common failure point that operators ignore until they're at full extension under load. On loaders and skid steers, verify the seat switch kills the engine or hydraulics as designed. A disconnected safety switch is a dealbreaker for us—and should be for you.

Step 5: Review load test certificates and compliance documents

If you're buying a crane, the load test certificate is part of the machine. Verify the date, the capacity tested, and who performed the test. Under ASME B30.5 (Source: ASME), mobile cranes require periodic inspections and load testing per the manufacturer's recommendations and applicable regulations.

For international deals—buying through a dealer in the UAE, Canada, or Europe and shipping elsewhere—confirm the documentation satisfies the local authority's requirements in the destination country. I've seen a $1.2 million crane sit idle for three weeks because its load test certificate didn't meet a regional regulator's requirements during a certification review. That's lost revenue you can't claim back.

What I mean is: the paperwork isn't a formality. It's the proof that the machine meets the standards you're about to rely on.

Step 6: Confirm parts and service availability

A great price on a used Terex is only a great deal if you can get parts and service when you need them. This is where small operators get hurt the most—buying a machine first and discovering after the fact that parts take six weeks to arrive.

Call the dealer or regional parts distributor before you commit. Ask about the specific model and year. Terex has produced a wide range of equipment over the decades—from compact track loaders to the AC series cranes to the massive Terex Titan mining trucks of the 1970s—and parts availability varies by region and machine age.

Dealer support varies significantly from one region to another. At least, that's been my experience across the dozens of fleets I've audited. It's worth an hour of phone calls to avoid six weeks of downtime.

Step 7: Do a final walk-through with your own operator or inspector

If you're serious about a machine, bring the person who will actually run it—or hire an independent inspector. Don't skip this. When I compared two similar Terex wheel loaders side by side last November—same model, similar hours, different maintenance histories—I understood why documented service history matters as much as the machine itself. An independent inspector found three issues in the first hour that changed our decision. The articulation joint on one unit showed wear that wasn't documented anywhere.

That inspection cost $1,200. It saved us from at least $18,000 in near-term repairs. For a small operation, spending $1,200 feels like a lot. But as a percentage of the purchase price, inspection is typically 0.1–0.5%—the cheapest insurance you'll buy all year.

Three mistakes I see small buyers make

1. Rushing because "the machine won't last." Sellers create urgency, and sometimes the urgency is real. But every time I've watched a buyer skip verification steps to beat another bidder, the result was an expensive surprise. Machines that genuinely disappear in 48 hours are rare.

2. Trusting documents without verifying them. In 2024, we investigated a machine with service records that looked off—mismatched fonts, inconsistent dates. Pulling the OEM history revealed a structural repair that was never disclosed. Since 2022, we've included documentation verification in every inspection. It's caught problems in 18% of first deliveries from outside vendors.

3. Treating inspection as optional. You're not being difficult by asking for records and testing systems. You're being professional. Every issue you catch before buying is a bargaining chip—and a repair bill you don't have to pay.

After all the uncertainty of evaluating used equipment, clear documentation, steady hydraulics, and working safety systems feel like a win. That clarity doesn't happen by luck. It happens because someone took the time to look.
