- Check the serial number plate against the purchase order. Not just the model, but the serial number itself.
- Verify the engine make, model, and tier certification (likely Tier 4 Final or equivalent, depending on your region).
- For a Terex AX4, also confirm the track shoe width and type (triple grouper vs. flat pad) if that was a specified option. It's a common miss.

- Undercarriage—count the track rollers (usually between 7-9 per side on an AX4-size machine), check for excessive wear or damage on the sprocket and idler.
- Boom and stick alignment—if you have a tape measure, check the pin-to-pin dimensions against the spec if you're suspicious. I once found a boom that was 2 inches shorter than spec on a machine delivered for a Redmond project (ugh).
To be fair, a few scuffs on the paint from transport are normal. But anything that looks like repair work (fresh paint over a dent, weld grinding marks) needs to be documented.
Step 3: Systems Verification—Hydraulics and Electric
This is where the difference between a 'good' delivery and a 'needs work' delivery really shows. I always do this with the machine running (safely, with the parking brake on).
Here's a checklist you can run through while the machine warms up:
- Hydraulic function smoothness. Cycle the boom, arm, bucket, and swing slowly. Look for jerky movement or excessive cavitation noise. Normal tolerance: smooth operation with no visible cylinder drift within 10-15 seconds after stopping the lever.
- Electrical system. Turn the key off and on again. Check that all warning lights on the dash light up and then go out as expected. Check the work lights, horn, and if equipped, the rearview camera.
- Engine performance. Run it at high idle (~2000 rpm or so) for 2-3 minutes. No unusual smoke (a bit of white on cold start is okay, but steady blue or black smoke means a problem). Listen for any knocking or ticking that sounds off.
- Air conditioning and cab. Set it to max cool and check it gets cold within 5 minutes. In the desert (or in a Lincoln afternoon), this matters.
I had a case where a brand new AX4 had a faulty hydraulic pump pressure compensator—the function was fine at low loads but would stall under heavy digging. Caught that during the warm-up test before we even moved the machine.
Step 4: Document and Certification Review—The Paper Trail
Most people spend all their time looking at the machine and forget the paperwork. Then they wonder why it takes 3 weeks to get registered or insured. I've seen this mistake cost a $22,000 redo and delayed a launch.
I collect these items before letting the truck leave:
- EC Declaration of Conformity (CE) or equivalent local compliance document. Must match the serial number.
- Manufacturer's warranty certificate. Check that the start date is correctly entered (not pre-dated from production date).
- Operator and maintenance manuals. Two copies ideally—one for the cab, one for the office.
- Proof of any optional equipment upgrades (like the Lincoln auxiliary hydraulic kit if ordered).
I also check the hour meter reading on delivery—should be near zero (typically under 5 hours for a factory-fresh machine). Anything above 20 hours and I want an explanation for what the machine was used for (testing, transport mode, etc.).
Step 5: Function and Load Test (If Possible)
This step is often skipped because of time pressure. I get it—the site is waiting, the rental clock is ticking. But even a short functional test can catch issues that visual checks miss.
If you have a bit of space and a counterweight, do this:
- Lift test. With a known weight (say, a 10-ton block), check that the machine can lift it within 10 degrees of center. Listen for relief valve noise indicating overload. Normal: smooth lift without stalling or excessive hydraulic noise.
- Track drive test. Drive the machine forward and backward in a straight line for 20-30 feet. Check for pulling to one side (track alignment issue).
- Swing function. Swing 180 degrees and back. Listen for smooth rotation without grinding or binding. Check that the swing brake holds when you take your hand off the lever.
A quick load test would have caught the issue I mentioned in Step 3 (the sticky compensator) much faster—before we even filled out the delivery form.
Common Mistakes I See on Every Other Delivery
After the checklist, here are the things that slip through on a regular basis:
- Assuming the machine is configured exactly like the demo unit. The demo unit had a different attachment. The delivered unit doesn't—and that matters for your application.
- Not recording the actual tire/undercarriage bolt torque. On wheels, this matters for safety. On tracks, it matters for track tension. Just check it.
- Relying on the transport driver's word. They're not responsible for the machine's specs. They're just moving it. Sign for 'apparent condition' only, not full acceptance.
One more thing: if you're buying a used Terex AX4 (or a machine with a Redmond, Lincoln, or any other regional rebuild past), make sure the rebuild or reconditioning is documented with receipts. The 'as-new' claim from a seller is only worth the paper it's printed on if there's no evidence.
Honestly, 5 minutes of verification on delivery day beats 5 weeks of correction. Or at least, in my experience, it beats a $15,000 rework order.
