Terex Off Road and Terex Comedil CTT 331-16: Same Model Number, Different Cost

I’m the office administrator for a 75-person heavy civil contractor. I don’t operate a Terex crane or run a Terex off-road haul truck, but every rental, service contract, and parts order goes through my desk—roughly $1.6 million a year across eight vendors. I report to operations and finance, which means I see the request that leaves the field and the invoice that comes back. Those two often don’t tell the same story.

In 2024, a site supervisor emailed me this full equipment request: “Need a Terex Comedil CTT 331-16, include erection, quote by Friday.” No jib length. No site access. No foundation data. I didn’t ask because the model number felt specific enough. It wasn’t.

The Surface Problem: Same Model Number, Different Quote

When a request is reduced to a model number, every vendor response looks comparable. Quote A says CTT 331-16. Quote B says CTT 331-16. Finance sees an apples-to-apples bidding situation. It is not.

The same model can carry different jib lengths, hook heights, control systems, electrical supply, tie points, and erection assumptions. The same off-road truck can be ordered with a different body, tire package, rear vision setup, emission tier, or maintenance inclusion. The model number is where the comparison starts, not where it ends.

The Deeper Problem: A Model Number Is a Memory Aid, Not a Specification

A model number helps the manufacturer organize engineering work and helps a dealer identify the product family. It was never designed to carry the full application brief. The trouble is that everyone in the request chain has a reason to keep using it. Field personnel identify machines by model. Dealers quote by model because that’s the most convenient reference. Finance wants a clean, comparable line item. So the model number becomes a shortcut for a lot of assumptions that nobody has written down.

That works fine when the item is a commodity—light bulbs, printer toner, same part number, same physical thing. It works badly for capital equipment, because a crane or a haul truck does one job well under one set of conditions and a different job poorly under another. The model tells you what family it belongs to. It does not tell you if it was specified for your site.

A tower crane isn’t one chart

Take the phrase “Terex Comedil CTT 331-16.” I’m not an engineer, but I’ve learned that tower crane suitability depends on load at radius, not just the largest load it can lift. A CTT 331-16 may be right for one site and wrong for the next if the reach, hook height, foundation reaction, tie-in schedule, and dismantling space are different. I used to think we could solve that by telling the dealer to include “everything.” Dealers hear that differently depending on what they have in stock, what the local rental market expects, and what they know about the project. The safest quote is not the same as the best quote.

One detail that doesn’t show on a quote summary is how the crane gets off the site. Erecting a tower crane is one job; bringing in a mobile crane to dismantle it at the end is another. If the access road or landing area is tight, that final shift can be expensive. It isn’t hidden. It just wasn’t asked.

An off-road truck has a duty cycle, not just a spec sheet

When I get a request for “Terex off road” trucks, I need the same reflex. Payload capacity is just the starting point. The real decision depends on haul distance, ramp grade, material density, site speed limits, body liner requirements, and how the machine will be serviced. One vendor may quote a heavier-duty body because that’s common in mining. Another may quote the baseline version because that’s what they have available. Both can honestly say they quoted what was asked.

The Part We Don’t Talk About: Assumptions Have No Owner

What I started to notice is that when an order goes wrong, it doesn’t fail because one person makes a deliberately bad decision. It fails because the assumptions are distributed. The site lead assumes the quote includes a configuration that can handle the ground conditions. The vendor assumes the model number means standard configuration. I assume the words “until the project is done” cover whatever the machine actually has to do. When reality arrives, nobody owns the gap; everyone owns a piece of it.

What most people don’t realize is that two vendors can quote the same machine model for different reasons. One is quoting the crane they have available. The other is quoting the crane you need. If you only compare line items, you will usually choose the one that is easier to offer, not the one that is cheaper to run.

The Real Cost, and How I Had to Learn It

I only believed all this after ignoring one email and paying for it. We rented a Terex off-road truck and compared two quotes. One rental included a full maintenance and tire program; the other was a bare rental rate. The bare rental was about $3,000 per month less, so that’s what we approved. I had even written in my notes: “ask about tire coverage.” I didn’t ask.

Within four months, we had paid $7,400 for tire replacements, a hydraulic hose failure, and two service visits. That didn’t include the operator downtime or the phone calls with finance. The higher quote would have cost us more on paper, but the lower quote cost us more in fact. That is the hidden tax of buying by price instead of by scope.

The tower crane version of that mistake is slower and more expensive. If the selected configuration doesn’t fit the foundation design or the erection plan, the schedule moves. Nobody can invoice you for a missed week because the cost spreads across foundation subcontractors, crane supplier standby, and your own crews. It just shows up as a project that took longer than estimated for reasons that are hard to prove.

The Fix: Start With What Has to Happen, Not What It Should Be Called

We changed our process. It isn’t fancy, and it doesn’t add a new software system. We ask one extra set of questions before sending any vendor request:

  • What is the machine expected to do in the first month? Use concrete descriptions, not brand poetry. Lift seven tonnes at 55 metres radius. Move material up a 12% grade. Load trucks in a specific loading bay.
  • What exists at the site? Include access dimensions, ground conditions, power supply, foundation drawings, and room for assembly or dismantling.
  • What is excluded? Every quote should state included service, excluded repairs, standard configuration, and the lead time if the configuration changes.

We also add a line to every request: if a model number is included, it is for reference only, and the vendor should tell us if the proposed configuration differs from the model’s standard data sheet by serial number. It sounds bureaucratic, but it kills the “same model, different machine” problem before it starts.

This makes the first quote take longer. Dealers sometimes push back and ask why we can’t just use the model number like everyone else. The answer is simple: I’m not buying a model number. I’m buying the result the machine has to produce—and I’d rather get one clarifying phone call now than a change order after the foundation is poured.

That shift in thinking cost time and money—the way all real lessons do. But it was the cheapest fix in our procurement workflow, because it stopped expensive alternatives from being framed as the same product. The Terex name was never the problem. The shortcut was.
