What is the Terex R070T like to run?
We run an R070T on tight urban sewer work. It's a 7-tonne-class machine that fits where larger equipment can't, and it moves between nearby work areas without a lot of extra logistics.

In my experience, buying a crane for occasional use is hard to justify. You don't just buy the machine. You buy certification, rigging, inspection schedules, operator training, insurance, storage, and the risk of idle capital. Crane certification and operator qualification requirements under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1400 aren't optional, and they aren't cheap.
Dodged a bullet a few years ago when my team almost bought a self-erecting crane for a single project. We priced it out, ran the utilization numbers, and rented instead. The rental cost us far less than the depreciation and storage on a crane that would have sat in the yard for ten months.

Is buying a used 2020 Terex smart?
A 2020 machine can be a great sweet spot. It's new enough to have modern emissions controls and old enough to be past the steepest depreciation. But the year alone doesn't tell you much.
In 2020, a dealer in Lincoln, Nebraska, quoted me a 2020 R070T with 1,850 hours and full service records. A second dealer had a 2020 with 1,400 hours but no maintenance file. The second one was $5,000 cheaper. I bought the first one anyway. The next year, the low-hour machine was back on the market with a new hydraulic pump.
So yes, buying a 2020 Terex can be smart if you verify the service history. If the records are missing, budget for a full inspection and fluid analysis before you sign.
What spec sheet numbers should I actually compare?
It's tempting to think you can compare two similar excavators by price and bucket size. That's an oversimplification that gets people into trouble.
Look at operating weight, bucket breakout force, digging depth, hydraulic flow and pressure, transport dimensions, and the counterweight package. The same model can be spec'd differently depending on the region and year. A machine with a smaller counterweight might be cheaper on paper but less stable with a full bucket.
If the dealer won't give you a serial-specific spec sheet, I get why that's a red flag. It's not paperwork—it's the difference between a machine that works and one that works against you.
Would I buy Terex again?
For the right application, yes. The R070T fits our sewer work, and the dealer support has been solid. That matters more than the paint color.
My advice: don't buy a brand. Buy a total-cost package from a dealer who answers the phone. Terex has a broad product line and global parts network, but the local dealer is what makes it work.
The cheap option only looks cheap until it isn't. A lesson learned the hard way—but worth learning.
