A Terex RT555 is a 55-ton-class rough terrain crane. The load chart is the table that tells you the maximum lift capacity at different radii, boom lengths, and configurations. The “white stats” on the side—the white specification label with GVW, axle loads, tire size, and serial number—are not the load chart. They are compliance and transport figures. They don't tell you how much the crane can pick at a given radius.

Most people assume a 55-ton crane lifts 55 tons. That is true only in the narrowest part of the chart. As the radius grows or the boom extends, the allowed load drops. I've seen buyers choose a used crane based on the model name, then find out the chart they need at 30 ft radius means a different machine altogether.

Altec vs Terex: Which Should I Choose?

I have mixed feelings about this one because there's no universal better brand. Altec is strong in utility equipment—aerial units, digger derricks, and insulated booms. Terex has a broader heavy equipment line, including rough terrain cranes, material handlers, and pick-and-carry machines. I usually tell people to start with the application, not the logo.

For example, if your crews are working on distribution lines, Altec's service body integration and dealer parts network are likely a better fit. If you need a 55-ton rough terrain crane to support a pipeline or civil site, Terex is the more natural conversation. Compare parts lead times and dealer proximity. A cheaper machine with a weaker local service network will cost you more in the first year, more often than not.

Why Are There Multiple Load Charts for the Same Terex?

One Terex model can have more than one load chart. Outriggers fully extended, outriggers partially extended, rubber-tire pick-and-carry, with auxiliary counterweight, without auxiliary counterweight, jib stowed, jib erected—these all change the numbers.

Assumption failure is the most common mistake. In a Q3 2024 audit, a vendor provided a load chart for the maximum counterweight package. The machine we inspected had the standard counterweight. That overstated capacity by roughly 6,000 lb at an extended radius. We rejected the submittal and required the serial-number-specific chart from the local Terex dealer. How Can You Verify a Terex Load Chart Before Buying?

Look for the document control number and revision date. A load chart is a controlled document. If the PDF has no source, no issue date, and no matching serial number, don't use it. The cab chart should be present and legible. ASME B30.5 requires load charts to be visible to the operator, and I'd rather see a worn chart with the original document number than a crisp photocopy with no number.

Ask the dealer to confirm which options are included on that specific machine—counterweight, hook block, jib, tire size. The white stats on the placard might match the model, but the load chart is what connects those stats to real lift capacity. If the seller can't provide the official chart within a week, I would walk away.

Do I Need an Engineer If I Have a Load Chart?

For simple lifts, no. For most commercial lifts, yes. A load chart is a boundary, not a plan. It doesn't account for outrigger ground bearing pressure, wind load on the load, rigging weight, or the skill of the operator. The chart might tell you a load is structurally fine at 20 ft radius, but if the ground under the outrigger is soft, the real limit is much lower.

I make a point of telling people to count rigging before the load. (e.g., a 5-ton load with a 400-lb spreader beam and 80-lb slings is 5.48 tons, not 5.0.) Small omissions are exactly how “fine on paper” turns into a red tag.

What Should You Consider When Comparing Prices?

Use total cost of ownership, not the invoice. I know that sounds like procurement jargon, but it matters with cranes. Two machines might both be Terex RT555s, but one has lower hours, newer tires, a verified load chart, and local dealer support. The other is $15,000 cheaper and comes with no documents.

In my experience, the lowest quote has cost us more in maybe 60% of the cases when you include downtime, documentation recovery, and parts delays. There's always a version where you save money. I'm not saying the cheapest is automatically bad. I'm saying you need to verify what you're buying before you compare the number.

Why Does the Load Chart Matter More Than the Purchase Price?

Because everything else can be fixed, but the load chart defines what the crane is allowed to do. It's not paperwork for the sake of paperwork. It's the link between the machine's design and the lift plan.

If you start with the right chart, the conversation moves to real choices: which crane size, which options, which dealer. If you start with a low price, you often spend the next few months justifying the decision and hoping the charts align. Tight schedules and disputed load chart numbers are what give project managers white hair. I'd rather have a small delay in procurement than a serious incident after the machine arrives.
